Science - testing materials to find the most waterproof

Mrs Bray wanted to make an umbrella but didn't know which materials were waterproof.

Before we started our experiment, we thought about our method and any safety precautions we needed to take (not running, not using water from the hot tap, and to walk carefully with the beakers of water). We predicted that plastic and wood would be the most waterproof.

We tested wood, plastic, fabric, paper and paper towel by pouring 100ml of water over each material and collecting any which ran through in a cup. We looked at how much water ran through the materials and how much water ran off / stayed on the surface.

Our experiment showed that we were correct - wood and plastic are the best materials for making an umbrella!

(And nobody got wet!)
